Prof. John DemesiMande holds the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (1989), Master of Science Clinical Studies (1993) and Doctor of Philosophy (2003) degrees from the University of Nairobi.

He has over 24 years experience in teaching, research and practice of Small Animal Surgery, having risen through the academic ranks of Assistant Lecturer (1992), Lecturer (1993), Senior Lecturer (2004) and Associate Professor (2014). He has served as Chairman of the Academic department of Clinical Studies 9January 2013-July 2015) and on various Committees of Senate, College, Faculty and Department including the Senate Committee on Review of SONU Constitution, Student Disciplinary Committee, Appointment Committees, the Faculty Curriculum Committee, Veterinary Faculty Farm Management Committee, Faculty Time Tabling Committee among others.

Prof. Mande has a wealth of experience in leadership and administrative functions gained from serving as Board Members as follows: Kenya Dairy Board (2006_2009) where he has served as a Member of the Technical and Marketing Committee; Kenya Veterinary Board (2011-2015) and (2015-2018) where has served as a Member and Chairman of the Technical Committee on Education and Quality Assurance (TeCEQuA), Audit Committee, Publicity and Communications Committee, Development and Capacity Building Committee. In addition, he has served on several Ministerial Taskforces and Committees including the Ministerial Taskforce on Development of Training in Leather and Leather Products (2007-2009: Ministerial Taskforce on Review of CAP  360 and Animal Welfare Policy (2012- to date).

Prof. Mande is an accredited Peer-Reviewer with the Commission for University Education and is accredited by the Pest Control Products Board (PCPB) as the Principal Investigator for the Efficacy Trials Study Group ffor Conducting Efficacy Trials on Antiparasitic products in dogs and cats in Kenya. He is an accomplished author and peer-reviewer and has authored several publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He has supervised 5 PhD and 6 Masters students to completion and is currently supervising 1 PhD and 4 Masters students in the Department of Clinical Studies, University of Nairobi, Kenya. He is the External Examiner in the Department of Veterinary Surgery and Theriogenology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania. 

He is a registered Veterinary Surgeon, an active Member of the Kenya Veterinary Association, the immediate former Editor In Chief of the Kenya Veterinarian, a peer-reviewed Scientific Journal of the Kenya Veterinary Association, and a Member of the Kenya National Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Mande appointed Chairman, University of Nairobi Veterinary Medicine Alumni Chapter effective from 1st November, 2007.
