On behalf of the University of Nairobi Alumni Association (UONAA), I welcome you to the UoN Alumni Association . Since taking office slightly over a year ago, the Executive Committee of the Alumni Association has worked diligently to move the Association forward, in line with its mission and vision. First, we have raised funds to assist needy students at the University, for instance in the 2016-17 academic year, we disbursed Ksh.2 million towards the UoN Bursary Fund. The donation brings the total amount that UONAA has spent on student bursaries since its inception in 2005 to Ksh.19 million. I call upon you to support this noble endeavor so that we can help more needy students complete their academic programs on schedule. Second, the Association has engaged in activities that support our alma mater. Over the past three years; 2015, 2016 and 2017, the Association contributed Ksh.500, 000 annually, towards the Nairobi Innovation Week, an annual event hosted by the University. So far, we have spent Ksh.1.5 million in sponsoring the event, which provides a platform for nurturing the next generation of young, energetic, talented and dynamic scientists, researchers and innovators. May I take this opportunity to congratulate the students and alumni who have showcased their innovations and talents during the annual innovation week. The Association commits to support next year’s event, scheduled for March 5-8 2018, and to join other partners and stakeholders in raising funds towards this noble initiative. I call upon you to join government agencies, development partners, corporate entities and researchers in either showcasing your innovations or raising funds for the event. In a related activity, this financial year, the Association contributed Ksh.300, 000 towards sponsoring the University Open Day at the main campus in Nairobi and also participated as an exhibitor in open days held in Mombasa and Kisumu. In 2018, we will continue supporting the University in many ways. The Association will contribute Ksh. 1 Million towards the Research Award that seeks to reward top researchers from different fields. The money will be set aside as an endowment by the Association. We encourage the chapters to support the Executive Committee in raising funds to support this initiative.
The Association also participated in the annual Commission for University Education (CUE) exhibition held at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa in February, the Nairobi International Trade Fair in October and the County Fairs in Kisumu and Mombasa. Third, the Association engaged in various recruitment activities, indeed, the Chapters remain our focal point for recruitment of new members, providing opportunities for alumni to connect with students through mentoring opportunities; building a strong network of alumni to help advance UONAA’s mission and supporting the Association through fundraising efforts. On June 8, 2017, we launched the Law Alumni Chapter which brought the total number of chapters so far unveiled to 15. Going forward, we plan to launch the following chapters: Nursing Sciences, Dentistry, Tropical and Infectious Diseases, Open, Distance and E-Learning (Odel) and Economics. As part of building capacity and to fast-track the realisation of our goals, the Association has appointed a new Executive Director Mr Keneth Sawe and an Alumni Officer in Charge of Marketing and Membership Ms Beatrice Kimuyu. It is envisaged that the two executives will bring to our Association a wealth of experience in alumni relations, communications, marketing and resource mobilization. Over the last 12 years, UONAA, has worked diligently to connect alumni with their alma mater. Today, more than 200,000 alumni have graduated from the University; the Association thus stands out as Kenya’s and East and Central Africa’s largest alumni association. The task ahead of us is to make UONAA the best alumni model in Africa. The Executive Committee is in the final stages of launching an alumni engagement platform that will enable our alumni register as members, pay their membership subscription, and engage with their alma mater at the touch of a button. We are hopeful that by the 1st quarter of 2018, this dream will become a reality. Finally, I wish to sincerely thank the University Management led by the Vice-Chancellor for their continued support to the Association. I also thank the Alumni and other partners for their unwavering commitment and support; this has led to the Association realising major milestones. We will continue with these great relationship to take the University of Nairobi to greater heights.
